“Who leaves the pine-tree, leaves his friend, unnerves his strength, invites his end.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Genuine reclaimed Pitch Pine (Pinus Palustris), historically is a precious and hard-wearing timber. Not only was it utilized in the construction of industrial aged mills, but also with the construction of our great ships, including the infamous Cutty Sark, 1869. Whereas, modern day Honduran Pitch pine (Pinus Caribaea) is slightly different in colour and weaker in strength, the two should not be confused as they are actually considered to be different species.
We only sell genuine, well seasoned, reclaimed Pitch Pine. The quality, size and strength of timbers are impressive, up to 40ft long and 12" wide. From these ancient beams, we mill them into planks and then machined them into floorboards. Because these timbers are so old and because they are 'seasoned', these lovely slow grown planks are much more stable than many timbers grown today, where the timber is farmed for readiness and speed.
Pitch pine is not as hard as oak but it is the hardest pine available. We only ever use natural hard wax oils and non-yellowing water based oils to finish these precious timbers. A gentle wash of white is the only other addition, in keeping with Scandinavian traditions.
