While Grande Restoration and Antique Restoration are names protected for specific families of oak flooring created by us, Driftwood Flooring is a UK trademark protection for a more specific kind of finish. We are the official creators of Driftwood flooring for solid and engineered oak floorboards in the UK. Its creation has taken more than 12 months of development and experimentation, the result being a series of floor finishes that are produced naturally, through slow tannin reactions within the oak and multiple layering organic processed. Driftwood floors represent some of our most innovative and exceptional natural-looking board surfaces to date.
Our sanded, planed and wire-brushed board finishes all accentuate the surface texture to bring out each individual board's character and beauty. The Reclaimed Flooring Company has evolved surface processing techniques, and discovered new techniques in the process.
The boards are delicately machined and treated prior to finishing in such a way that opens up the pores to be more receptive. This forged position enables our oils and organic compounds to penetrate deeper into the surface and create a stronger reaction with the natural tannin within the oak.
This recent artistic and technological advance lends yet another dimension and depth to the antiquated surface of our boards, whose elegant, Time-worn subtleties can be appreciated as daylight pours over their subtle surface contours. Normally such variations are only found with reclaimed timbers that are hundreds of years old. Our unique timber-drying technique is the secret to the success of the Time-worn surface, and it is because we collaborate closely with our chosen sawmills in Europe that we have absolute control over the milling, drying and machining of all the timber that we import.
We are yet to find another UK hardwood floor manufacturer who has realised surface processing as unique and authentic-looking as our Storm Damaged boards. The technique was first developed from our early days of cleaning old timbers with water jets and compressed air. As our ambitions bloomed, our machinery and our knowledge became more sophisticated. Our daily processing and finishing experiments would often fail painfully but, sometimes, our tests would lead to a breakthrough - and this was the case with our recent innovation: Storm Damaged surfaces. This distinctive surface parades arbitrary and absolutely natural wear and tear patches similar to those we all love to see on shipwrecked timbers. Only our caressing and beating isn't quite so traumatic. These deep-surface patches and pore pockets invite our organic oils and colours to gather and settle across each individual board. Storm Damaged surfaces are reserved for our most lively Driftwoods, although in some cases we are willing to mix and match texture and finish to suit your requirements.
Our hand-crafted surface structures, emphasised by a softness in tone and depth of patina, possess a beauty normally reserved for century-aged, reclaimed timbers and floorboards. The quality of the natural material is our pride and inspiration in everything that we do. When creating 'time', there is no quick fix. We consciously remain a compact operation, enabling us to focus on individual quality rather than mass quantity. The Reclaimed Flooring Company continues to air-dry organic oiled finishes for up to 12 hrs between coats, resulting in a more resilient, deeper pore penetration. Unlike the industry norm of UV-drying oils in just minutes to save time, we will never sacrifice quality for speed.
